Our Lady of the Mountains at P.O. Box 727-1093 East College Ave., Stanton, KY 40380-2354 US - Emergency Food Bank

Emergency Food Bank

Our Lady of the Mountains Church, in collaboration with the Mountain Parkway Church of God and the Kentucky River Foothills Association, sponsors and operates the Powell County Emergency Food Bank, in Clay City.  The food bank is open on Wednesdays from 11:00AM until 2:00PM.

Eligibility for assistance is based on requirements outlined by God’s Pantry, the food distribution facility in Lexington.  150 to 250 families a month are served by the Emergency Food Bank.  Donations of non-perishable foods or cash for this mission are always needed and can be made by contacting Sister Eileen.  As the statement below indicates, all help is useful.

As this is an emergency food bank, recipients are limited to these services six times a year.  The official policy as stated by The Powell County Food Bank Committee, and distributed to Food Bank applicants, is:

The Emergency Food Bank of Powell County is being stretched to the limit and, in order to continue to serve those in emergency situations, there is need to change the amount of visits a family is able to make to the Emergency Food Bank.

As of December 1, 2002, there will be a change in the policies of the Powell County Emergency Food Bank.  When the Food Bank opened in February 2001 the purpose was solely to serve people in emergencies, for example: loss of job, unexpected illness, unusually high bills for a particular brief time, or other crisis situations.  The Food Bank is operated and totally financially supported by the Mountain Parkway Church of God, Kentucky River Foothills, Our Lady of the Mountains Catholic Church and some small community donations.  We are able to obtain some commodities from God’s Pantry in Lexington that help supplement the food that is bought from the funds contributed from the above supporters.  Our records show that over the past year and a half we have been serving an average of 145 families each month.  Our financial resources and limited workforce do not allow us to continue to serve you in the same way.

Therefore, as of December 1, 2002, the Food Bank will be able to service you six times a year.  You are able to choose which six months out of the year you are in need of emergency food.
